MOMus is deeply saddened by the untimely death of the artist Ira Waldron. Her work has a unique style. With an insurmountable combination of humor and tragedy she constantly reminds us that life is widely separated from the visions of the wonderful world we dreamed of and that we cannot overcome the limits of the intellectual. She urges us to contemplate the inconceivable through the artistic shifts she applies by inverting the conventions of the Beautiful and the Sublime, lightly, spontaneously and, at the same time, essentially and philosophically, with historicity but also with scathing criticism of current affairs.
Ira Waldron was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and lived for long periods in Moscow, Paris and London. The last 15 years she constantly lived in Paris. She participated in exhibitions in Thessaloniki and in 2018 she had her solo exhibition entitled "Interstices" at the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki (today MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts). Several works of art, including the emblematic series “Die Damen mit Den Hunden” (2006-2007), a powerful gesture against dictatorships with reference to Hitler's terrorism that was first presented at the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art in 2007, are part of the MOMus collections.
MOMus will keep showcasing the work of this important artist.
