She was deeply respected within the Czech film circles as a powerful creative force and a mentor, affectionately described as the movement’s “spiritual guru” or éminence grise, yet her work remained largely overlooked both at home and abroad until recently.

Ester Krumbachová worked as a theater artist beginning in 1953, first in České Budějovice and later in Prague. She contributed to many important films of the Czechoslovak New Wave such as Diamonds of the Night, Daisies, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, A Carriage Going to Vienna, The Party and the Guests, Witchhammer, Fruit of Paradise, and The Ear, among others. In 1970, she directed her only film, Murdering the Devil. Since 1972, she was banned from contributing to feature films and television. She only worked occasionally on short films with Krátký Film Praha (Short Film Prague), film studios outside Prague, and several international productions. She was able to overcome the ban in 1983, when she and Věra Chytilová made The Very Late Afternoon of a Faun. After 1990 she was able to return to film once more, and her last job included script editing, set and costume design for the film Marian (1996).

The last few years have seen a wide-ranging critical reappraisal of Krumbachová’s work, with her contribution recognized through MUBI’s Notebook (January, 2026), Fashion in Film Festival, London & UK (2025), film program in BFI Southbank, London (2025), Metrograph, New York (2024), international film festivals such as IFF Karlovy Vary and Rotterdam (2024), exhibitions in Prague, Brno and Glasgow, and publications that foreground the artist’s distinctive vision. This renewed attention owes much to the achievements of the Ester Krumbachová Archive, initiated in 2016 and run by the Prague-based curatorial organization ARE. Its mission has been to digitize thousands of surviving objects, writings, scripts, and designs, and to champion new artistic and scholarly engagement with Krumbachová’s legacy. In 2016, twenty years after Ester Krumbachová’s death, her last partner, Ivan Paik, granted the ARE organization, the artist Blaise Kirschner, and a student research group from Prague’s AAAD, access to her estate. Until then, the estate had remained inaccessible, despite repeated efforts by her colleagues, friends and film historians.

The collective work and engaged research that has led to the creation, the life and accessibility of this archive honors and reflects Krumbachová’s own practice of kinship and exchange. It is celebrated, along with the artist’s work, within the Biennale, as an example of a persistent refusal to forget and ignore, of kinship in free thinking & association, of the social poesis that is a condition of possibility. Such approaches of assembling, directed to love for the dispossessed and a radical recovery of alternative grounds of insurgency, are a core concern of the 9th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, titled “everything must change. RIS9”.

The 9th Thessaloniki Biennale or Contemporary Art runs between October 2025 and July 2026 through a few manifestations, collaborations and errant paths leading to a main exhibition due to open in late May 2026.

It is curated by independent curator Nadja Argyropoulou and organized by MOMus – Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki.

The Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art is co-financed by the European Union (NSRF – “Central Macedonia” Operational Programme).

About the film:

Murdering the Devil (Czechoslovakia, dir. Ester Krumbachová, 1970)

“She is in her forties—or near them—and life isn’t at all what she expected. Maybe a trip down memory lane could help? In her younger days there had been a splendid young man, Bohouš Čert, whom she fancied and who had also seemed interested in her. And so, she looks for and finds Bohouš Čert, who is now Engineer Čert. He has become pretentious, arrogant, self-involved—a nightmare. And still, she thinks it has to be this cretinous creature who will lead her to the altar.

Murdering the Devil remains the sole directorial effort of art director and costume designer Ester Krumbachová, who also co-wrote some of the key Czech ’60s films, like Věra Chytilová’s seminal monument of pop feminism Daisies (1966), Otakar Vávra’s vivisection of authoritarian structures Witchhammer (1968), or Jaromil Jireš’s perverse female fairy tale Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1969). Murdering the Devil had the bad luck of timing; it reached the cinemas at the extremely frosty beginning of the so-called Normalization period. Even among like-minded souls, a work so anarchic and subversive barely stood a chance. After decades in the shadows of film history, the time to rediscover this eccentric gem has come!”

—Olaf Möller, IFFR

“A subversive anti-rom-com that cooly cuts male chauvinism down to size and luxuriates in female pleasure”

—Film at Lincoln Center

“The 1960s saw a remarkable cinematic renaissance in what was then called Czechoslovakia, and Ester Krumbachová was its renaissance woman”

—Jonathan Owen, The Criterion Collection

🌐 More materials related to Murdering the Devil, found in Ester Krumbachová’s estate, are available at esterkrumachova.org under “Murdering the Devil.”

Credit

Murdering the Devil (Czechoslovakia, dir. The presentation moves through the documentation of the earlier works into the psychological theatre that became the stage for his works during the early 2000s, finally arriving at a new era of the Ballenesque in color, with the release of his latest publication, Spirits and Spaces. This exhibition provides an opportunity to survey the extent of Ballen’s ability to transform an image beyond the confines of narrative or medium, as well as his interest in forefronting what lies on the fringes of our consciousness. Ballen’s work breaks down the boundaries between photography and other arts.

Although Ballen is noted as a photographer, his photographic practice integrates photography, painting, drawing, installation and video - transforming it into a medium that considers all formal visual elements, expanding photography far beyond simply capturing what is in front of the camera. This kind of layered image making provokes and challenges viewers to look inwards at the worlds of their own thoughts and feelings, rather than simply recognizing an iteration of reality - this is the power of the Ballenesque.

The exhibition is co-organised by the Benaki Museum, MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and Studio Roger Ballen, with the support of EMST – National Museum of Contemporary Arts Athens.

Curated by: Hercules Papaioannou

CV

Roger Ballen (NYC, USA, 1950) is considered one of the most influential and important photographic artists of the 21st centur. Letsios traversed the body of the city in a quest to discover unseen aspects, moments and scenes that were clearly distanced from the official ideological facade, revealing an elliptical yet profoundly human face of Volos.
Hercules Papaioannou

Opening hours: Mon. – Thu.: 08:00 – 15:00, Fri.: 08:00 – 21:00, Sun. 10:00 – 13:00 & 18:00 – 21:00

Co-organizer: MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Volos City Museum

Hide From Calendar

Do not hide

Fri, 11 Sep 2020 22:03:43 +0000 admin 2161 at http://backend.momus.gr Ιστορίες του κάμπου | Βασίλης Νεμπεγλεριώτης http://backend.momus.gr/el/exhibitions/istories-toy-kampoy-basilis-nempegleriotis Stories from the Plain | Vassilis Nempegleriotis dimitra.samsaki Thu, 06/19/2025 - 12:14

Exhibition Type

MOMus abroad

Image

Start Date

Fri, 11/15/2024 - 11:00

End Date

Sun, 01/05/2025 - 20:00

Museum

Other venues

Body

Municipal Art Gallery of Nikaia–Ag. a place name that in Arvanitika means “mountain of beech trees” -, in Markopoulo, Attica, was started in 1984 by Manos Karakostas and is one of the first estates in Greece to turn to organic farming and then to regenerative organic farming.

In the unique environment of this estate, the exhibition “the goat” is taking place, which according to Epaminondas Christofilopoulos, Chairman, Board of Administration of the Metropolitan Organization of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMus), “started as an imaginative idea, a way to do something different and emphasize the importance of a more ethical attitude towards the environment”.
The exhibition is based on an initiative by Maro Lagia, who in 1984 pioneered the acquisition of the Alexandros Iolas donation to the Macedonian Center for Contemporary Art, laying the foundation for the establishment of the first Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece, in the city of Thessaloniki.

The exhibition entitled "The Goat" aspires, through a series of visual works from different generations, to combine, in an original, inventive and imaginative way, references and symbolisms associated with this specific animal and covering a wide range, in a single visual environment, in an unexpected space, such as that of a warehouse on a large estate in Markopoulo.

The works presented - paintings, sculptures and ceramics, photographs and installations - approach the subject with special sensitivity, are works that are distinguished for their visual qualities, but, at the same time, indirectly raise issues about the "soul" of animals, within the broader context of reexamining their relationship and coexistence with humans.

The curator of the exhibition, Yannis Bolis, notes: "In ancient Greek myth, a goat will nourish the little Zeus with her milk, while the tragic Pan and the Satyrs will dwell in forests and next to riverbanks in a joyful and orgiastic atmosphere of dance, music and unrestrained erotic lust. The goat is one of those animals found all over the planet, an animal that claims a special place in myths and traditions, beliefs and religious rituals, in direct relation to the beginnings of human civilization, the permanent settlements of the Neolithic period, the occupation with agriculture and animal husbandry, survival and food. No other animal has managed to provoke such diametrically opposed attitudes. A symbol of fertility and prosperity, strength, endurance and sexual vitality. And on the other hand, the gloomy dimension, the magic and the diabolical presence, the figure of Satan which, several times, in the Christian world has many of the morphological characteristics of the goat.

Thuli Misirloglou, Artistic Director of MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art-Collections of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Museum of Contemporary Art, notes: “the exhibition “the goat” is not an exhibition, nor an action. In my eyes, it is an “exhibition-event”, an exhibition and social performance together, which brings the creative spontaneity of Maros – always so constructive, from the very beginning of the Museum – alongside the creative reflexes of MOMus. The actors are also their people. And in them there are always those who come from the past to the present, who contribute positively, whose thinking is in an open line with their soul, through the prism of art and its freedom, who create emotions and not just rules… an exhibition-meeting in a new and unexpected common place, the place of the meeting of art, nature and joy.”

Artists of the exhibition: George Alexandridis, Annita Argyroeliopoulou, Andriana Verveti, Stratis Vogiatzis, Andreas Vousouras, Apostolos Georgiou, Nikos Giavropoulos, Kornelios Grammenos, Lydia Dambasina, Christoforos Doulgeris, Antigone Kavvatha, Yannis Kastritsis, Diane Katsiaficas, Yannis Kontaratos, Kyriakos Krokos, Tania Latarjet, Alexandros Maganiotis, Thanos Makris, Manolis Babousis, Mania Benisi, Nikolas Bliatkas, Natalia Mela, Alex Mylona, Eleni Mylona, Nurako (Fanouris Moraitis), Kosmas Xenakis, Maria Panagiotou, Antonis Papadopoulos, Ifigenia Sdoukou, Miltos Skouras, George Stathopoulos, Danae Stamatiou, Nikos Tranos, George Tsakiris, George Tserionis, Kostas Tsolis, Alekos Fassianos, Dionysis Christofilogiannis.

Curator: Yannis Bolis
Exhibition opening hours and days:
JULY: every Wednesday and Thursday, 19:00-21:00
SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER: every Thursday and Friday, 18:00-21:00
To find the place, follow the following geographical coordinates based on google maps: "MALI VENI" ESTATE, MARKOPOULO, ATTICA
https://maps.app.goo.gl/zohpoknCbtnNvPRF8?g_st=iw

Cover Image

Hide From Calendar

Do not hide

Thu, 27 Jun 2024 11:02:51 +0000 dimitra.samsaki 2721 at http://backend.momus.gr Έκθεση εικαστικών: «Αστικό Τοπίο. Even the recent issue of the pandemic due to the coronavirus, which has suddenly and violently changed the relationship of people both with each other and with their living and working environment, can be a substantial issue of concern regarding the dystopian conditions we experience in urban space”, notes Maria Tsantsanoglou, Deputy General Director of MOMus, in her introductory text.

“Today, life in the urban space is plagued by a multitude of problems such as unemployment, the economic situation of workers, poverty, the devaluation of the arts and education, the commercialization of universal goods such as Education, Health, Welfare, Energy, Water, Culture, the impoverishment of immigrants and refugees, the rise of state repression, the commercialization - shrinkage of natural wealth and the disasters caused by military competitions and military interventions, all of this makes us worried as a collective space and makes us want to speak in the way we can: with our art,” the Board of Directors of the Chamber Of Fine Arts Of Greece states in its announcement regarding the exhibition.

As Spyros Pavlidis, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aristotle Museum of Natural History, emphasizes, “the Aristotle Museum of Natural History of Thessaloniki today constitutes a bridge of the valid scientific knowledge of the AUTH with the wider public of our city, Macedonia and the country in general on the important issue of the Relationship between Man and Nature. The works draw from science fiction, urban protests and historical revolts to encourage the audience’s reflection on what comes next. The process of searching for possibilities becomes a process of becoming aware of the capitalist impasse and, above all, an exercise in imagination regarding our own contribution and existence in possible dystopian or utopian futures.

The exhibition is organised by the independent art and culture organisation Kontrapunkt as part of the KRIK Festival for Critical Culture, and is supported by MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts and the Embassy of Greece in North Macedonia.

The three women artists, Boudouroglou, Emmanouilidou and Psoma, began working together during the pandemic, when they decided to use the time of imposed isolation to jointly reflect, experiment and create. A series of works that respond to key contemporary issues such as environmental collapse, forced population movements and the onslaught of technology were presented in 2022-23 in the exhibition “Graceland: The Triumph of an Uncertain Path” as part of the 8th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art of MOMus. At MoCA Skopje, this collaborative project is renewed and expanded with new works by the three artists and the participation of guest artist Bilal Yilmaz from Türkiye.

At the heart of this new exhibition “Graceland Paradox: Navigating Uncertainty” lies the research conducted by the three artists around sustainable techniques and materials —bioplastics, crystals, handmade paper, rhizomes, materials in the phase of transition from raw material to ephemeral artistic medium— as a process of production and reflection. In dialogue with their works, Bilal Yilmaz expands the political and imaginative dimension of the exhibition. Inspired by contemporary protest movements —including recent mobilisations in Greece, North Macedonia and the wider region— the artist focuses on the erosion of democracy and the power of collective action. Through his work, he recalls the spirit of protest and criticises the mechanism of manipulated information. He calls on us to choose the images and actions that motivate us, and to bring them into our daily lives as acts of quiet, radical resistance.

Curated by: Lydia Chatziiakovou

Parallel events

Wednesday, 25 June 2025, 20:00
Short discussion-introduction to the main concepts and practices of the exhibition with the artists.

Speakers: Tihomir Topuzovski (Director, MoCA Skopje), Anna Mykoniati (curator, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens), Thouli Misirloglou (Artistic Director, MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art). Moderators: Lydia Chatziiakovou (curator), Vladimir Janchevski (curator, MoCA).

Thursday, 26 June 2025, 16:00-18:00
Workshop “Material experimentations in Graceland” with the artists Rania Emmanouilidou, Fani Boudouroglou, Lia Psoma.

©Fani Boudouroglou, Fernweh, 2022

Video still

Hide From Calendar

Do not hide

Tue, 17 Jun 2025 13:51:19 +0000 dimitra.samsaki 2877 at http://backend.momus.gr Κάμπος http://backend.momus.gr/el/exhibitions/kampos Kampos dimitra.samsaki Wed, 08/28/2024 - 15:42

Exhibition Type

MOMus abroad

Image

Start Date

Mon, 07/22/2024 - 20:40

End Date

Tue, 07/23/2024 - 20:40

Museum

Other venues

Body

Photography exhibition / Audio walk / Theatre performance

Cross-disciplinary project, based on Stratis Vogiatzis' book of the same title, in the frame of the programme "All Greece One Culture" organised by the Ministry of Culture.

Chios

There is a life that silently unfolds underneath the ground; a life that has reconciled with the chaos and the co-existence of the diverse elements that compose the world.
