With street photography as its backbone, a dominant artistic trend of the photographic medium in the second half of the 20th century, it bridges three generations of artists with common point of reference their relationship with Greece and their membership in the famous Magnum Photos agency, which has written since its foundation in 1947 and until today, to a large degree, modern world’s history in images.

Greek-American Constantine Manos walks around the country in the sixties as a contemporary Ulysses, looking to heal the latent wound of migration. Nikos Economopoulos crosses Greece and the Balkans in the last two decades of the 20th century focusing mainly in fragile minorities and turbulent communities. Greek-Albanian Enri Canaj, respectively, visits in the second decade of the 21st century a homeland he never got to know properly, imprinted though deeply in the memories of his childhood and dwelling still in the everyday family stories.

The expressiveness of the snapshot, the dedication on the everyday, underprivileged man, the Balkan place as a womb of common experiences and wounds, the occasionally melancholic austereness of the black and white tones in a contemporary world dressed now with vivid, saturated colors, act as common elements of the three artistic generations, that maintained among them a relationship of support and/or apprenticeship. Walking through the exhibition one may also spontaneously trace the historical, aesthetic and social relevance in the work of the three photographers, as they distill from the world the substance of life and photography.

The works of Constantine Manos and Nikos Economopoulos belong to the collection of the Benaki Museum Photographic Archives, Athens.

Curated by: Hercules Papaioannou, Curator of MOMUS-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography

Artists’ Talks

MOMUS-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography (Warehouse Α’, Pier Α’, Port of Thessaloniki)

Sunday, 12 July 2026, 18:00-20:00

The exhibition’s curator, Hercules Papaioannou talks with the photographers and the audience about their work and the dimensions of street photography nowadays.

The discussion will be held in Greek. Unfolding across three thematic sections, thourgh selected works from the Collection and Archive Costakis, the exhibition traces the transition from academic norms to experimental practices, and from established conventions to radical utopian visions, as artists engaged with and responded to the profound ideological, social, and aesthetic transformations of their time.

The tripartite structure – City, Nature, Universe – offers a conceptual mapping of human experience across the constructed (City), organic (Nature) and unexplored (Universe) realms. Each section highlights the distinct trajectories within the Russian avant-garde as it navigated the fertile intersections of artistic experimentation, technological innovation, and utopia.

The “City” section brings together works concerned with the reconfiguration of space, material culture, and everyday life through the articulation of pure form and the disciplined, functional use of materials. Rapid modernization redefined aesthetic values, while technological advances transformed daily life. Within the aesthetics of Constructivism, new approaches to architecture and design emerged, extending their influence from clothing to industrial design and redefining social roles and gender relations.

The “Nature” section focuses on works that engage with the perpetual movement, vital rhythms, and mutable conditions of the organic world enveloping human life. Artists associated with the Organic School sought to restore nature to the center of artistic practice, envisioning it alternately as a primordial, overpowering force and as an integral part of lived experience. Through sustained observation and experimentation, they explored how shifts in light, temperature, and atmosphere continuously transform perceptions of the natural world, incorporating organic movement and sound into their work.

The “Universe” section examines artistic responses to utopian imaginaries, cosmic exploration, and the desire to encounter “other territories.” Representations of celestial and cosmic objects combine speculative and scientific elements, giving rise to new cosmologies and philosophical frameworks. A philosophical drive to comprehend the unseen dimensions of existence – most notably the boundless expanse of the cosmos – found expression in movements such as Suprematism and Cosmism. Coexisting with scientific thought, these impulses produced dynamic, often explosive artistic forms.

The “Human” section serves as a connective thread linking City, Nature, and Universe. The human figure occupies a central position in the revolutionary and utopian visions of the Russian avant-garde. Artistic experimentation extended beyond testing the limits of human capability, seeking instead to expand these limits in order to improve everyday life and articulate new models for the future. The works on display foreground the relationship between art and consciousness, collectivity, science, and spiritual and philosophical inquiry, portraying humans as active agentsin shaping the world around them.

Artists: Babichev Aleksei, Bobrov Vassilii, Bubnova Varvara, Chashnik Ilya, Chekrygin Vassilii, Drevin Aleksandr, Ender Boris, Ender Ksenia, Ender Maria, Ender Yuri, Filonov Pavel, Grinberg Nikolai, Guro Yelena, Ioganson Karel, Kandinsky Wassily, Klucis Gustav, Kliun Ivan, Kruchenykh Aleksei, Kudriashev Ivan, Ladovsky Nikolai, Lissitzky El, Malevich Kazimir, Mayakovsky Vladimir, Matyushin Mikhail, Miller Grigori, Miturich Petr, Morgunov Aleksei, Nikritin Solomon, Puni Ivan, Plaksin Mikhail, Popova Liubov, Redko Kliment, Rodchenko Aleksandr, Rozanova Olga, Semashkevich Roman, Sofronova Antonina, Stepanova Varvara, Suetin Nikolai, Sulimo–Samuilo Vsevolod, Tatlin Vladimir, Udaltsova Nadezhda, Vialov Konstantin, Volkov Aleksandr.

Director NGASM: Syrago Tsiara

Exhibition Curators: Maria Tsantsanoglou, Artistic Director of MOMUS-Museum of Modern Art-Costakis Collection, Syrago Tsiara, Director, National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum
Architectural Design: Nadja Korbut, Kiril Ass
Exhibition Production: Eirini–Dafni Sapka (National Gallery-Alexandros Soutsos Museum), Angeliki Charistou (MOMUS)
Visual Identity: DpS Athens: Dimitris Papazoglou, Aristomenis Tzanos

Hide From Calendar

Do not hide

Tue, 31 Mar 2026 09:03:22 +0000 dimitra.samsaki 3003 at http://backend.momus.gr Μαζί, Ορατές http://backend.momus.gr/el/exhibitions/mazi-orates Together, Visible dimitra.samsaki Fri, 03/13/2026 - 16:26

Exhibition Type

MOMus abroad

Image

Start Date

Fri, 03/27/2026 - 20:40

End Date

Sun, 08/30/2026 - 20:40

Museum

Thessaloniki Museum of Photography

Body

Stavros Niarchos Park Perimeter

The photography exhibition "Together, Visible," a collaboration of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center with MOMUS-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, which is presented in the framework of the WOW Festival Athens 2026, brings together works by twelve contemporary photographers from the museum's permanent collection and highlights multiple facets of women's experiences.

In this selection of works, woman is placed at the center not as a subject, but as a site onto which the most persistent social expectations are inscribed: image, role, memory, visibility, origin. Emphasis is placed on works from the last two decades, while at the same time attempting to highlight the work of a generation of younger or less established artists in the domestic landscape canon. In this way, both the breadth of the country's photographic scene and the concerns regarding the commonplace landscape, environmental protection, the involvement of the landscape with history and myth, the critical reading of the tourist phenomenon, etc. are revealed.

The Municipal Gallery of Chania has over time implemented creative synergies with museums and cultural institutions, thus confirming its important role as a dynamic center on the cultural map of the country. In this context, the exhibition “landscape stories” is also being hosted, produced by MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, which manages to capture characteristic landscapes of the country through modern photographic perspective. Thus, the audience of the Chania Art Gallery and the large photographic community of Crete have the opportunity to interact with a set that highlights not only the artistic value of photography but also the uniqueness of each gaze.

The curator of the exhibition, Hercules Papaioannou, points out the origins of landscape painting and its application in Greece: “Landscape painting emerged as a side project in the background of paintings in the early Renaissance, but as an autonomous subject it was established only in the mid-16th century. In Greece, it appeared in the last quarter of the 19th century and was established, with at least naturalistic fidelity, in the 20th thanks to photography. The 19th century had been preceded by the widespread circulation of the photographic landscape with ruins, which validated the modern Greek ideology of antiquities.

The work of Swiss photographer Fred Boissonnas and Nelly's, dating to the early 20th century and the interwar period respectively, played a key role: immersed in history, folklore, and mythology, it contributed to turning landscape, even devoid of ruins, into a pillar of the official national narrative, along with the aura of the illustrated periodicals of the time, which by then had started publishing amateur landscape photographs. In the post-war period, the island landscape, in both its actual and picture versions, was used as a vehicle to promote mass tourism. They were followed by worthy photographers, who recorded many different aspects of landscape photography in the country.

Curated by: Hercules Papaioannou
Assistant curator: George Anastasakis

Participating photographers: Pericles Boutos, Panos Charalambidis - Mary Chairetaki, Katerina Digoni Konstantinos Gdontakis, Kostas Kapsianis, Petros Koublis, Demetris Koilalous, Yiannis Koukourakis, Ioannis Konstantinou, Babis Kougemitros, liana Meintani, Rea Papadopoulou, Kosmas Pavlidis, Achilleas Tilegrafos, Konstantinos Tountas, Marinos Tsagkarakis, Jeff Vanderpool, Yorgos Yatromanolakis

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalog, guided tours for the public and educational activities, which will be announced.

Co-organizer: MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography
Hospitality Sponsor: Samaria Hotel
Event Sponsor: Loupaki Estate
Accessibility Equipment Sponsor: Medical Shop

The exhibition will operate according to the summer opening hours of the Municipal Gallery of Chania:
Monday to Saturday, hours: 10:00 -14:00 & 19:00-22:00
Sunday: Closed (except for organized tours)

Hide From Calendar

Do not hide

Fri, 05 Apr 2024 07:50:51 +0000 dimitra.samsaki 2668 at http://backend.momus.gr Ιστορίες του κάμπου | Βασίλης Νεμπεγλεριώτης http://backend.momus.gr/el/exhibitions/istories-toy-kampoy-basilis-nempegleriotis Stories from the Plain | Vassilis Nempegleriotis dimitra.samsaki Thu, 06/19/2025 - 12:14

Exhibition Type

MOMus abroad

Image

Start Date

Fri, 11/15/2024 - 11:00

End Date

Sun, 01/05/2025 - 20:00

Museum

Other venues

Body

Municipal Art Gallery of Nikaia–Ag. a place name that in Arvanitika means “mountain of beech trees” -, in Markopoulo, Attica, was started in 1984 by Manos Karakostas and is one of the first estates in Greece to turn to organic farming and then to regenerative organic farming.

In the unique environment of this estate, the exhibition “the goat” is taking place, which according to Epaminondas Christofilopoulos, Chairman, Board of Administration of the Metropolitan Organization of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMus), “started as an imaginative idea, a way to do something different and emphasize the importance of a more ethical attitude towards the environment”.
The exhibition is based on an initiative by Maro Lagia, who in 1984 pioneered the acquisition of the Alexandros Iolas donation to the Macedonian Center for Contemporary Art, laying the foundation for the establishment of the first Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece, in the city of Thessaloniki.

The exhibition entitled "The Goat" aspires, through a series of visual works from different generations, to combine, in an original, inventive and imaginative way, references and symbolisms associated with this specific animal and covering a wide range, in a single visual environment, in an unexpected space, such as that of a warehouse on a large estate in Markopoulo.

The works presented - paintings, sculptures and ceramics, photographs and installations - approach the subject with special sensitivity, are works that are distinguished for their visual qualities, but, at the same time, indirectly raise issues about the "soul" of animals, within the broader context of reexamining their relationship and coexistence with humans.

The curator of the exhibition, Yannis Bolis, notes: "In ancient Greek myth, a goat will nourish the little Zeus with her milk, while the tragic Pan and the Satyrs will dwell in forests and next to riverbanks in a joyful and orgiastic atmosphere of dance, music and unrestrained erotic lust. The goat is one of those animals found all over the planet, an animal that claims a special place in myths and traditions, beliefs and religious rituals, in direct relation to the beginnings of human civilization, the permanent settlements of the Neolithic period, the occupation with agriculture and animal husbandry, survival and food. No other animal has managed to provoke such diametrically opposed attitudes. A symbol of fertility and prosperity, strength, endurance and sexual vitality. And on the other hand, the gloomy dimension, the magic and the diabolical presence, the figure of Satan which, several times, in the Christian world has many of the morphological characteristics of the goat.

Thuli Misirloglou, Artistic Director of MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art-Collections of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Museum of Contemporary Art, notes: “the exhibition “the goat” is not an exhibition, nor an action. In my eyes, it is an “exhibition-event”, an exhibition and social performance together, which brings the creative spontaneity of Maros – always so constructive, from the very beginning of the Museum – alongside the creative reflexes of MOMus. The actors are also their people. And in them there are always those who come from the past to the present, who contribute positively, whose thinking is in an open line with their soul, through the prism of art and its freedom, who create emotions and not just rules… an exhibition-meeting in a new and unexpected common place, the place of the meeting of art, nature and joy.”

Artists of the exhibition: George Alexandridis, Annita Argyroeliopoulou, Andriana Verveti, Stratis Vogiatzis, Andreas Vousouras, Apostolos Georgiou, Nikos Giavropoulos, Kornelios Grammenos, Lydia Dambasina, Christoforos Doulgeris, Antigone Kavvatha, Yannis Kastritsis, Diane Katsiaficas, Yannis Kontaratos, Kyriakos Krokos, Tania Latarjet, Alexandros Maganiotis, Thanos Makris, Manolis Babousis, Mania Benisi, Nikolas Bliatkas, Natalia Mela, Alex Mylona, Eleni Mylona, Nurako (Fanouris Moraitis), Kosmas Xenakis, Maria Panagiotou, Antonis Papadopoulos, Ifigenia Sdoukou, Miltos Skouras, George Stathopoulos, Danae Stamatiou, Nikos Tranos, George Tsakiris, George Tserionis, Kostas Tsolis, Alekos Fassianos, Dionysis Christofilogiannis.

Curator: Yannis Bolis
Exhibition opening hours and days:
JULY: every Wednesday and Thursday, 19:00-21:00
SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER: every Thursday and Friday, 18:00-21:00
To find the place, follow the following geographical coordinates based on google maps: "MALI VENI" ESTATE, MARKOPOULO, ATTICA
https://maps.app.goo.gl/zohpoknCbtnNvPRF8?g_st=iw

Cover Image

Hide From Calendar

Do not hide

Thu, 27 Jun 2024 11:02:51 +0000 dimitra.samsaki 2721 at http://backend.momus.gr Υφάνσεις εκ νέου | Μουσείο της Πόλης του Βόλου http://backend.momus.gr/el/exhibitions/yfanseis-ek-neoy-moyseio-tis-polis-toy-boloy Weaving Anew | Volos Museum of the City dimitra.samsaki Thu, 06/19/2025 - 11:59

Exhibition Type

MOMus abroad

Image

Start Date

Fri, 04/15/2022 - 22:30

End Date

Sun, 08/28/2022 - 16:30

Museum

Other venues

Body

Volos Museum of the City

Opening: Friday 15 April 2022, 19:30

The art of weaving unrolls its thread outside Thessaloniki and “knits the tapestry” of the exhibition “Weaving Anew”, following MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, at the Volos Museum of the City.

The exhibition presents the flourishing and history of Greek tapestry along with paintings and sculptures that either formed the basis of the weaving designs or are in stylistic sequence with them. The works draw from science fiction, urban protests and historical revolts to encourage the audience’s reflection on what comes next. The process of searching for possibilities becomes a process of becoming aware of the capitalist impasse and, above all, an exercise in imagination regarding our own contribution and existence in possible dystopian or utopian futures.

The exhibition is organised by the independent art and culture organisation Kontrapunkt as part of the KRIK Festival for Critical Culture, and is supported by MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts and the Embassy of Greece in North Macedonia.

The three women artists, Boudouroglou, Emmanouilidou and Psoma, began working together during the pandemic, when they decided to use the time of imposed isolation to jointly reflect, experiment and create. A series of works that respond to key contemporary issues such as environmental collapse, forced population movements and the onslaught of technology were presented in 2022-23 in the exhibition “Graceland: The Triumph of an Uncertain Path” as part of the 8th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art of MOMus. At MoCA Skopje, this collaborative project is renewed and expanded with new works by the three artists and the participation of guest artist Bilal Yilmaz from Türkiye.

At the heart of this new exhibition “Graceland Paradox: Navigating Uncertainty” lies the research conducted by the three artists around sustainable techniques and materials —bioplastics, crystals, handmade paper, rhizomes, materials in the phase of transition from raw material to ephemeral artistic medium— as a process of production and reflection. In dialogue with their works, Bilal Yilmaz expands the political and imaginative dimension of the exhibition. Inspired by contemporary protest movements —including recent mobilisations in Greece, North Macedonia and the wider region— the artist focuses on the erosion of democracy and the power of collective action. Through his work, he recalls the spirit of protest and criticises the mechanism of manipulated information. He calls on us to choose the images and actions that motivate us, and to bring them into our daily lives as acts of quiet, radical resistance.

Curated by: Lydia Chatziiakovou

Parallel events

Wednesday, 25 June 2025, 20:00
Short discussion-introduction to the main concepts and practices of the exhibition with the artists.

Speakers: Tihomir Topuzovski (Director, MoCA Skopje), Anna Mykoniati (curator, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens), Thouli Misirloglou (Artistic Director, MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art). Moderators: Lydia Chatziiakovou (curator), Vladimir Janchevski (curator, MoCA).

Thursday, 26 June 2025, 16:00-18:00
Workshop “Material experimentations in Graceland” with the artists Rania Emmanouilidou, Fani Boudouroglou, Lia Psoma.

©Fani Boudouroglou, Fernweh, 2022

Video still

Hide From Calendar

Do not hide

Tue, 17 Jun 2025 13:51:19 +0000 dimitra.samsaki 2877 at http://backend.momus.gr
