Exhibition “Weaving manifestations through artworks from the MOMus collections”

Continuing the exploration of the multidimensional role of the fabric and the weaving techniques in contemporary visual creation and in line with the recent practice of MOMus to introduce acquisitions of its collections in thematic exhibitions, the MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts presents the exhibition entitled ‘Weaving manifestations through artworks from the MOMus collections’ from September 8 through October 30, 2022.
For the first time in the history of MOMus and especially in the Experimental Center for the Arts venue, in Warehouse B1 of the Port of Thessaloniki, artworks from the three Thessaloniki MOMus Museums (the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Photography) compose a new original production, which attempts to redefine part of the collections but also, of the history of art, and to highlight multiple aspects of artistic creation by setting thread, fabric and weaving processes as a reference point.
The exhibition develops from the period of modernism via Avant-garde artworks and runs across contemporary artistic production from the 1960s to the present day.
More specifically, the historic starting point of the exhibition is formed by the Russian Avant-garde designs with geometric details for fabrics from the Museum of Modern Art-Costakis collection.
Artistic reality from the 1960s onwards is represented by works of contemporary art -paintings, sculptures, constructions, installations and videos from the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as, photographic series from the collection of the Museum of Photography- by almost 30 artists. The specific artworks will form the main core around which new narratives will be developed, focusing on different expressive means and activating various cultural issues, issues of memory, physicality, gender, etc. Their creators, who display differences in artistic experience within historical time, also reveal diversity in terms of the overall cultural reception and artistic transformation of the world, society and history.
Through the multiplicity of the artworks, the exhibition aims to shed light on alternative ways of engaging fabric and weaving into the artistic practice, as well as, on many other aspects of a material that is identified with any stage in the evolution of human society and culture.
