Sofia Eliza Bouratsis has been appointed Artistic Director of MOMUS-Experimental Center for the Arts for the next five years, according to the FEK (1638/Υ.Ο.Δ.Δ./15.10.2026), after the completion of an international call, conducted and finalized by the Management Board of MOMUS.
Sofia Eliza Bouratsis holds an interdisciplinary and multilayered professional and research career in the field of contemporary art. A PhD in Aesthetics and Art Sciences from the University of Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne (2015), for more than fifteen years she has combined academic research and teaching (Université du Québec à Montréal, Université Paris I, the Prétentaine journal) with independent curating of exhibitions at museums and art centers (in Greece, Luxembourg, Germany, and the United States), as well as with her role as a cultural policy advisor, with experience at both UNESCO and the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, where she took part in the conception and writing of the national Cultural Development Plan 2018–2028. Since 2023 she has worked as a curator at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutzos Museum, where, in addition to curating Rena Papaspyrou's exhibition "Surfaces, A User’s manual” (2024), which inaugurated the "Space in Between” she conducted research into the history of Greek art from the Metapolitefsi (post-1974 period) onward, while at the same time gaining substantial administrative and developmental experience within the framework of a major national cultural organization.
Her body of work includes an extensive corpus of publications at the international level, among them texts in exhibition catalogues, scholarly articles, and edited publications. A distinctive feature of her curatorial approach is her ability to create unexpected encounters between institutions, organizations, artworks, people, and social groups that would not otherwise cross paths, activating art as a living, inclusive, and poetic common ground. Born in Luxembourg and with a strong European identity and background, but also a substantial, lived relationship with Thessaloniki, her hometown, Sofia Eliza Bouratsis brings to MOMUS-Experimental Center for the Arts a vision of artistic experimentation, outward-looking engagement, and international networking.
The Management Board and the General Director of the Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki-MOMUS congratulate Sofia Eliza Bouratsis, along with their best wishes on her new post.
