A new, double workshop addressing children with axis on musical experimentations, electronic music and musical technologies commences on October 2025 at MOMus-Museum of Modern Art-Costakis Collection, Moni Lazariston, Thessaloniki, under the title “Composing sound paintings”, led by Zesses Seglias and Andrey Smirnov.
The participation in the double workshop is admission free, while registration is mandatory (find details below).
Following the completion of the two workshops on March 2026, the young musicians will execute their joint musical composition along with the musicians of DissonArt Ensemble, completing their experience with a unique artistic presentation.
The programme is supported by the 2025 Funding for Youth Projects of Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

A. Workshop with Zesses Seglias
October 2025 – March 2026
Workshop participants have the opportunity to discover the world of contemporary music and the sound creation through play and improvisation. They explore the relationship between sound and silence, they create musical instruments with every-day objects and useful instruments, they experiment with new composition techniques, they participate at the composition and interpretation of a musical melody, combining sound along with image, being inspired – amongst others- by the art-pieces of the Costakis collection of the Museum.
Dates & hours of meeting ups: Saturday 4, 11, 18 October / 8, 15, 29 November / 13, 20 December / 17, 24, 31 January / 7, 14, 28 February, 10:00 – 12:00. On Sunday 1 March, a common performance of the two workshops will take place along with DissonArt Ensemble.

Audience: Children aged 6-12. The knowledge of a musical instrument is not mandatory. Classes will be held in Greek. The workshop will be supervised by an Education Curator from MOMus.

B. Workshop with Andrey Smirnov
January – March 2026
Andrey Smirnov’s workshop is dedicated to the origins of electronic music, sound art and music technologies, focusing on key inventions and ideas at the time of their appearance. At the span of the workshop an experimental approach will be followed were a variety of instruments and tools will be used while participants will also create their own. The main areas to be explored are New Instruments, New Sound and New Boundaries under the broader thematic of New Music.
Dates & hours of meeting ups: Saturday 17, 24, 31 January / 7, 14, 28 February, 12:00-14:00. On Sunday 1March, a common performance of the two workshops will take place along with DissonArt Ensemble.

Curricula Vitae
Zesses Seglias is a composer of sonic bodies and lingual structures. His compositional output focuses on the relationship between the sound of voice and its semantic, as defined by language. Much of this repertoire is staged, although concert pieces also share the same principle. Latest compositional activity focuses on unifying musical and spoken language in a hybrid of sound and meaning described as spoken sound theatre. Opera and music theatre has been on the spotlight of his creation: To the Lighthouse (2017) in Bregenzer Festspiele received rave reviews by magazines and newspapers such as Opernwelt, Süddeutsche and Frankfurter Allgemeine. In 2023, he was commissioned by the Greek National Opera to compose a new music theatre piece based on Samuel Beckett's Not I. Other accomplishments include hystéra (2014) at the GrazOpera, while he has been a finalist in opera composition competitions (Joseph Fux – Graz, Mannheim National Theatre). In 2023 he was awarded with the Staatsstipendium from the Austrian state. In 2026 a new, semi-staged vocal theatre piece commissioned by Konzerthaus and supported by EVS foundation will receive its premiere. Seglias has taught Composition and Music Education subjects in various universities and academies.
Andrey Smirnov is a musical artist and researcher, internationally known for his teaching and research in the field of electronic music and the history of avant-garde music along visual arts. He established the Theremin Centre and he was the head of the Sound – Laboratory at the Rodchenko School of Arts in Moscow. He teaches history and aesthetics of electroacoustic music, sound design and composition, new musical interfaces and physical computing courses. He has implemented a variety of workshops and seminars, not only specialized but also for the general public, in the USA, Europe and Russia and has participated in worth-mentioning festivals and conferences. He is the author of the books “Sound In Z: Experiments in Sound and Electronic Music in Early 20th Century Russia” (Walther Koenig & Sound and Music, London, 2013) and “In Search of Lost Sound. Experimental Sound Culture in Russia and USSR in the first half of the 20th century” (Moscow, GARAGE, 2020) (The Book of the Year Award, Innovation 2021). Since September 2023, Andrey Smirnov is a special scientific associate at MOMus-Museum of Modern Art-Kostakis Collection in Thessaloniki.
